Monmouth County
New Jersey
Summary
This 150,000 gallons-per-day facility continues to deliver strong performance through advanced treatment technology, along with a pump station and pipeline connection to the local sewer utility. The system provides a high level of wastewater treatment, removing more than 500,000 pounds of nitrogen and over 1,000 pounds of heavy metals from the waste stream each year—helping to protect the surrounding environment.
By treating wastewater on-site, the system eliminated the need for off-site hauling, removing more than 35 tanker trucks from public roads daily. This not only significantly reduces operating costs for the County but also cuts greenhouse gas emissions by thousands of pounds per day, improving air quality and quality of life for the local community.
Through its partnership with Natural Systems Utilities, the County benefits from a reliable, flexible, and future-ready solution for managing high-strength wastewater—designed to meet current needs and adapt to future regulatory requirements.
Challenge
Monmouth County faced the challenge of treating high-strength leachate generated at the Monmouth County Reclamation Center in a way that was both environmentally responsible and economically viable. To address this, the County entered into a public-private partnership with Natural Systems Utilities (NSU) and Middlesex Water Company (MWC) to design, build, and operate a new pretreatment facility under an initial 15-year contract.
The County’s primary objective was to implement a highly efficient system capable of meeting strict discharge limits while minimizing environmental impact and long-term operational costs. NSU’s solution was designed with these priorities at its core—delivering advanced treatment performance through a sustainable, cost-effective approach.
