Meadowood Napa Valley
California
Summary
At Meadowood Napa Valley, Natural Systems Utilities (NSU) brings decades of expertise in decentralized wastewater treatment and water reuse to fully manage the property’s complex infrastructure. The system includes three separate extended aeration treatment plants, designed to provide reliable, high-quality treatment that supports the resort’s sustainability goals.
NSU conducts daily water quality testing, not only to meet regulatory requirements but also to fine-tune the biological treatment process for optimal performance. Mechanical systems—including pumps and screening equipment—are inspected and maintained daily to ensure uninterrupted operation, even with the typical debris found in sewer systems.
Treated water is carefully monitored to ensure it meets the quality standards necessary for reuse in golf course irrigation. As the licensed operator of record, NSU is responsible for all regulatory compliance and system performance. While we collaborate closely with Meadowood’s facilities team, NSU serves as a trusted partner, delivering complete, dependable management of the resort’s wastewater system.
Challenge
One of the key challenges at Meadowood Napa Valley is operating and maintaining a wastewater treatment system that is over 40 years old. Aging equipment brings a high level of unpredictability, with mechanical breakdowns occurring without warning. Despite these challenges, the Owner has consistently relied on NSU’s rapid response and hands-on expertise to resolve issues as they arise—minimizing disruption and maintaining compliance.
NSU continues to assess the system’s performance and recommend targeted upgrades that extend the life of existing infrastructure. By implementing strategic improvements, NSU has helped the Owner delay major capital investments while keeping long-term operating costs under control. This proactive approach ensures reliable service from an aging system while supporting the resort’s operational and financial goals.
Solution
To support the Owner in making informed, cost-effective decisions about their aging infrastructure, Natural Systems Utilities developed a comprehensive Wastewater Master Plan. This plan serves as a roadmap for prioritizing investments, improving system reliability, and extending the life of existing assets.
As part of the ongoing operational strategy, NSU also upgraded the facility with remote telemetry and monitoring technology. This allows real-time tracking of system performance and enables NSU to detect and respond to equipment issues more quickly—minimizing downtime and ensuring consistent, reliable operation.
