Domino Sugar Factory Redevelopment
New York, NY
Summary
NSU is in the construction phase of a 400,000gpd wastewater treatment and reuse facility for Two Trees Management at the Domino Sugar Factory redevelopment project in New York City. The project consists of 5 mixed use buildings that will all contribute wastewater to the reuse facility. Treated water will be distributed to the buildings for non-potable needs and the excess treated water will be discharged to the East River mitigating combined sewer overflows and improving river quality.
Challenge
Two Trees Management a development firm with an appetite for sustainability approached NSU to assist with reducing potable water demand and combined sewer overflows generated by a multi building urban redevelopment.
Achievements
NSU welcomed the challenge and is leveraging prior experience of district scale initiatives from our work at the Solaire/Verdesian in Battery Park City and Helena/VIA in the Hell’s Kitchen section of midtown Manhattan to assist in our design, build operate model. NSU is in the construction phase of a 400,000 gpd non-potable supply facility utilizing blackwater from 5 buildings as its source water.
Highlights
- NYCDEP Comprehensive Water Reuse Program
- District Non-Potable Water Supply
Solution
“THE SOLUTION” The facility is being designed to produce non-potable water suitable for reuse in cooling towers, toilets, irrigation and sidewalk maintenance complying with all state and federal regulatory agencies. NSU is working closely with the developer.
“THE SIZE” With space being a valuable commodity in NYC the developer tasked NSU with keep footprint to a minimum. Currently the treatment facility including all associated tankage will require less than 10,000 square feet of low value below ground space to achieve the goal minimizing combined sewer overflow impacts from the community.
