Challenge

Monmouth County along with Natural Systems Utilities (NSU) and Middlesex Water Company (MWC) formed a public private partnership to design, construct and operate a new leachate pretreatment facility to serve the Monmouth County Reclamation Center in Tinton Falls, New Jersey under an initial 15-year contract. The solution designed by NSU focused on the County’s primary goal of developing a highly efficient treatment plant designed to meet the challenging effluent limits, in an environmentally sustainable and cost effective manner.

Summary

This new 150,000 gpd facility consists of advanced treatment technology, plus a pump station and pipeline that connects to the local sewer utility. The system provides a very high level of treatment that helps protect the environment by removing over 500,000 pounds of nitrogen and over 1,000 pounds of heavy metals from the waste stream every year. Onsite treatment also eliminated the need for off-site hauling, removing over 35 tankers from public roads daily. NSU’s system reduces the amount of untreated leachate hauled off-site, significantly lowers operating costs to the County, and positively impacts the environment. The elimination of this truck traffic improves the quality of life for the local community and reduce air pollution, including thousands of pounds per day of greenhouse gas emissions. This partnership enables the County to have in place a state of the art system to manage high strength wastewater with long-term reliability, flexibility and designed to accommodate future regulations
