Jackson Meadow
Minnesota
Summary
Natural Systems Utilities (NSU) manages every aspect of the Jackson Meadow wastewater treatment system. Our operators monitor the gravity collection system to ensure proper flow to the treatment site, and once at the site, the solids levels in the septic tanks are recorded at regular intervals and septic pumping is coordinated as necessary. All of our operator’s have a background in biology and chemistry, which they leverage to accurately assess treatment efficiency based upon analytical sampling results, and make any adjustments as necessary. We also manage all reporting and correspondence with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to ensure compliance with all state regulations. These services are proudly provided by NSU with an environmentally friendly focus that matches the conservation oriented vision of the Jackson Meadow developer and community.
Challenge
Jackson Meadow is a cluster development located in Marine on St. Croix, MN overlooking the beautiful St. Croix River Valley. The development employs a cluster-housing model, which allows for the preservation of over 70% of the site, as open space. All 60 homes within this development are concentrated on only 40 acres, with an additional 300 acres dedicated as permanent natural prairie and open space through conservation easements. Providing onsite wastewater treatment to a small lot cluster development while still preserving the natural prairie habitat was a significant challenge for the developer.
Achievements
Since becoming operational the system has successfully treated the communities water while safely preserving the local habitat.
Highlights
- Manage all reporting with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
- Two Horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands
Solution
The solution was to install two horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands to provide pretreatment of the domestic wastewater prior to disposal. These wetland treatment systems effectively and efficiently treat the wastewater, while at the same time preserving the aesthetic value of the development and the community. NSU provides a full operational team to manage the wastewater treatment system. The focus is on providing onsite wastewater treatment for the cluster community while preserving the habitat.
